The Colorado air, brisk and chilly for this evening’s Red Carpet event. Tonight’s spotlight is “The Ballad of Lefty Brown”. In this homage to the golden age of Westerns, actor Bill Pullman stars as Lefty Brown, longtime sidekick to a famous Lawman Eddie Johnson, played by Peter Fonda. In this film, Eddie Johnson, killed on the Montana frontier and Lefty takes it upon himself to avenge the death of his friend. With everyone around him doubting his ability to fill the shoes of Eddie, Lefty begins to feel as though no one has his back. Rather than be backed into a corner, he plans to stand his ground and not move without a fight.
Very gritty and raw, I was impressed by the process writer/director Jared Moshés presents this piece.
Prior to the screening, I was able to speak candidly with Bill Pullman himself about why he loves acting in Independent films more so than Hollywood films. His reply, “Independent films allow you more room with your character, more personalization. Something Hollywood doesn’t leave as much room for.”

If you are wondering what his favorite snack is to bring on set, well, that would be almonds; or cashews if he is trying to “mix it up a little”.
Another showcase for the Red Carpet tonight was the film “Lullaby Killer”. In this film, a young detective Karski (Tomasz Schuchardt) is on a case in which the suspect, Wladyslaw Mazurkiewicz (Andrzej Chyra), has been accused of nearly 30 murders but has only confessed to six . As Karski struggles to prove Mazurkiewicz is guilty, but quickly finds out there are many roadblocks lying ahead. As he begins to investigate the crimes, he upturns a world of police corruption and political red tape of postwar Poland. Directed by Krzysztof Lang, this noir-style murder mystery is based on real life events that took place in Krakow in the 1950’s. This movie has me on the edge of my seat. I could not believe the things I was witnessing on the screen, yet to know this was based on actual events was even more intriguing to see. Inside the life of an officer, trying to convict a murderer.
Actor Kyle Gass strolls down the Red Carpet, making waves as he goes. His excitement and banter with the camera is what we all love and most recognized for. Although he is probably more known for being the better half of the group “Tenacious D”, tonight he is here in support of his latest film “Gnaw”. This horror flick by Colorado filmmaker, Haylar Garcia delves with equal gusto into paranormal and psychological phenomena. After fleeing an abusive relationship, Jennifer wakes up one morning to find tiny wounds all over her body that were not there before. Unsure if the strange bites are a figment of her imagination, or if they are somehow related to the vacant apartment next door or the tortured young woman who used to live there.

Overall, I would have to say that this was yet another amazing night for movies. The Denver Film Festival has so many different types of movies to offer, which makes it extremely difficult to see them all.
