Opening night of the Denver Film Festival showcased an array of talent from actors, producers and writers. Taking place at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in downtown Denver, this festival has been going strong since 1978. After three decades, the Denver Film Festival is well known for bringing the best of the indie film scene and also hosts annual festivals such as Film on the Rocks which takes place at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
Tonight’s main attraction was the premiere of a film titled Lady Bird. Greta Gerwig who has received many acclaims over the years for her acting is now behind the lens, taking on a directorial role with this film. Starring Saoirse Ronan as Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson as a teenager who tries to fight turning into her mom. This dramatic comedy explores the bond with humor while focusing on the turbulent relationship between the mother and daughter. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, I really enjoyed watching this film. Amazing, intriguing and very well written, ‘Lady Bird’ would be one I would recommend to all.
Another interesting film of the evening was ‘Jonbenet’s Tricycle’, a film centralized on a Denver legend known for collecting almost everything-forging all sorts of emotion connections to objects of which he acquires. Many of these items represent the darker side of life. 20 years ago while living in Boulder, Andrew Novick managed to obtain JonBenet Ramsey’s tricycle after her notorious murder took place. Andrew has since tried solving the mystery himself by taking the tricycle on a journey into the realm of psychic phenomena. This autobiographical documentary examines the human urge to possess things impacted by the experience of tragedy and the impact of what pop culture and media bring to our lives. Again, this would be another one I would recommend to see. A very interesting look into a person’s mind.
The Denver Film Festival will be going from November 1-12 so you still have time to check out all of the amazing films yet to come. To see the full lineup of films & show times, click on the link below:
