The streets of New York were alive with an especially fashionable vibe as models, designers, buyers and press from all over the world communed for Fashion Week 2016. With the onslaught of social media and the confusion it creates in the marketplace, many big name designers opted for a “show now buy now” structure. Typically, collections shown at fashion weeks are featured as a “what is to come” in a season or two ahead.
Shows that span across an already bustling city are complimented by pop up shops, after parties, red carpets and celebrity sightings. This season of fashion week was nothing short of long flowing gowns with a goddess like and Renaissance type of flavor. We are also seeing more and more jewelry designers adorn the runway with their collections.
Between the online updates, real time news-feeds, snap chats and tweets; the experience wouldn’t be complete without taking in a few shows. Couture it is! Designers spanning the globe came together to let their creativity show. An elegant runway event with mostly long, flowing gowns and a few exquisite pantsuits in the mix as well.
Vanny Tousignant and Anniesa Hasibuan created collections for the royal woman. Vanny showed what I call the “convertible flowing gown” with a white denim skinny pant as the base layer. This look had a certain appeal to it. Anniesa came about with oodles of rich, red velvet fabrics accompanied with gold trims. Guests assisted the majestic model make her way with her train as it spilled over the runway edge.
Fashion is never complete without the flair of ART that was clearly demonstrated through the collections of Alexandra Popescu-York and VIVRE Canvas Couture. Both designers showed us what a step up from traditional patterns looks like. Alexandra stole the show with gorgeous scenes of sunsets, bare naked trees, dragons and striking lighting bolts strategically placed on her shimmering gowns. This new form of technology through direct to fabric digital printing has began to resonate with only a few designers. These fashion forward designers understand that the sky is the limit on how you can portray imagery to create “wearable art”. We are certain to see this new wave of textiles saturate the runway with big design house collections in the seasons to come. VIVRE featured gowns made of canvas that had been painted with images of jellyfish to floralesque scenery. What a labor of love and patience it must be to create these masterpieces.
…and finally, it just wouldn’t seem to be a complete show without a jewelry designer giving us some serious neck candy. Ozuna and Teresita Tañon achieved just that with their FREEDOM collection. Statement neck pieces that will lead the eyes into a trance and stimulate the salivary glands into straight drool mode. Oversized tassels, stones and beads…oh my! I just want to jump into that cool pool of green goodness with a mimosa in hand. Tantalizing. You’ll know it when you see it.
I could go on and on about the sights, sounds and smells of these city streets. In a blink of an eye, however, the news feeds lighten and hashtag #nyfw is placed on the top shelf. Things begin to close down and get packed up almost as quickly as they were built up. We all know that Rome was not built in a day. Lucky for us fashion watchers, the fashion empires will continue to get constructed as well.
