BMX & Street Sports
Denver BMX professional AJ Anaya is part of the VOLTA team and is thrilled to be coming back to his hometown. He’s competed at the professional BMX level since 2006 and has taken part in numerous shows and sports events including America’s got Talent, half time shows for the NFL, the NBA and the NHL, and the Pan American Games. Now he’s part of the first BMX freestyle cast in Cirque du Soleil’s history as characters in the show called Free Spirits.
Sure to be a Denver crowd pleaser, VOLTA features a full-blown BMX park mounted on stage in front of the audience’s very eyes for the breathtaking BMX finale as riders invade the stage to deliver a jaw-dropping, fast and furious performance of nonstop acrobatics on wheels. The riders go up the jump boxes and perform air tricks before landing and leaping off the ramps again, crisscrossing and spinning their bikes in midair in a spirit of brotherhood.
The creators of VOLTA drew inspiration from the spirit of adventure that pervades the world of BMX, street sports and acrobatics. Whether they are on a bike, hopping from rooftop to rooftop, or double dutch rope skipping, urban sports enthusiasts constantly challenge themselves and defy convention.
Circus and Electronic Music – A Stream of Gripping Musical Landscapes
Written by electronic music composer Anthony Gonzalez (M83), the highly cinematic music of VOLTA evokes a complex array of emotions and moods that that resonates in the Big Top night after night. Electronic music was incorporated to circus to present the new street sports disciplines in a context that would highlight them best and would share the urban energy of those disciplines.
The creation of Anthony Gonzalez is a narrative tool in its own, echoing the different arcs in the storyline and expressing the distinct personalities of the worlds of VOLTA. Denver music fans can look forward to VOLTA’s live band which is complete with powerful vocalists, violinist, percussion and more. The rich, musical performance is perfectly synced with the acrobatics, helping to fully immerse guests into the urban world of VOLTA.
The Costumes – An Ode to Freedom and Self-Acceptance
The stunning costumes of VOLTA have been designed by Zaldy Goco, famous for his work with Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani and for TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race.
